Strong Wind Signal No. 9 hoisted: HK Observatory

Typhoon Saoula

The Observatory will issue the Strong Wind Signal, No. 9 between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. today as Typhoon Saola edges closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong, winds over the region have strengthened.

Before noon, the Hong Kong Observatory advised members of the public to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

According to the present forecast track, Saola will be rather close to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary tomorrow (1 September) and the following day (2 September). The local weather will deteriorate, the Observatory said.

There will be heavy squally showers and winds will strengthen further. Saola will also bring storm surge to the coastal low-lying areas. Depending on the intensity of Saola, its distance from the Pearl River Estuary, and the changes in local winds, the Observatory will consider issuing a higher tropical cyclone warning signal tomorrow.

Members of the public should take note of the latest weather forecast.
