3-Month-Old baby in Critical Condition Awaits Heart Transplant

Three-month-old Whitney

HONG KONG – The Hong Kong Hospital Authority is urgently pleading with the public to consider organ donation, as a 3-month-old baby girl battles for her life.

Little Whitney has been diagnosed with a severe heart condition that has left her in critical condition at the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital. Doctors say Whitney’s only hope for survival is a life-saving heart transplant.

“Whitney’s heart is simply not strong enough to pump blood effectively throughout her body,” explained a spokesperson for the Hospital Authority. “She is relying on a ventilator machine to stay alive, and we are doing everything we can to find a matching donor heart before it’s too late.”

The infant is reported to be at the top of the heart transplant waiting list for patients of similar size, weighing between 6-18 kg. While the authority is hoping to find a donor with blood type B+ or O+, they say any compatible blood type would work.

“When a patient willing to donate an organ has passed away and no suitable patient is identified on the Mainland, the cross-boundary organ donation and matching mechanism will facilitate a transplant in Hong Kong to bring hope to a critically ill patient,” the spokesperson stated.

With time running out, the Hospital Authority is making an impassioned plea to the public to consider registering as an organ donor. Experts say even a single donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation.

“We are doing everything in our power to find a donor for little Whitney,” the spokesperson said. “But we need the public’s help. A child’s life hangs in the balance, and the gift of organ donation could be the miracle that saves her.”
