Hong Kong has been named the world’s best public transport city, topping a global ranking by travel and culture magazine Time Out. The recognition places the bustling metropolis ahead of 18 other cities in a survey that evaluated public transportation systems worldwide.
The British magazine polled over 18,500 residents across 50 regions to gauge their satisfaction with local transit networks. Asian cities dominated the list, with Shanghai, Taipei, Seoul, and Singapore among the nine regional representatives earning spots in the rankings.
Hong Kong’s public transport system received a near-perfect 98 percent satisfaction rate from local residents surveyed. The city’s iconic Mass Transit Railway (MTR) emerged as a standout feature, praised for its efficiency, cleanliness, and extensive 10-line network connecting Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories, and the mainland border.
The Time Out report also highlighted Hong Kong’s diverse transit options, including air-conditioned buses, minibuses, and the city’s famed double-decker trams. The magazine called the trams “arguably the coolest way to get around any city,” cementing their place as a cultural and practical gem.
Shanghai and Beijing Follow Closely
Trailing Hong Kong, Shanghai claimed the second spot with a 94 percent approval rating, thanks to its 20-line metro system, known for its speed and reliability. Beijing secured third place with 91 percent, bolstered by its extensive public transit network and growing emphasis on cycling infrastructure.
