Bulusan Volcano Erupts Twice, Spewing Ash and Raising Concerns in the Bicol Region

A phreatic eruption of Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon

Sorsogon, Philippines — Bulusan Volcano in the Philippines unleashed two ash-laden eruptions Tuesday, prompting authorities to maintain a low-level alert while warning local communities about potential volcanic hazards.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the volcano erupted for six minutes early Tuesday morning and then again for 77 minutes Tuesday night, sending a 70-meter ash plume drifting southwest.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol confirmed the volcanic activity, noting that the eruption plume was partially obscured by clouds. The event generated 66 volcanic earthquakes, including six tremors lasting between two and 12 minutes.

Residents in Sorsogon province reported rumbling sounds, while ashfall was documented in multiple barangays across Irosin and Bulan municipalities. Sulfur dioxide emissions reached 548 tonnes per day, significantly higher than the baseline levels.

Authorities have strictly prohibited entry within a four-kilometer permanent danger zone and urged vigilance in surrounding areas. Local communities are advised to take precautions, particularly vulnerable populations such as the elderly, individuals with respiratory conditions, and infants.

“Communities experiencing ashfall must use protective masks or wet cloth to prevent ash inhalation,” the Phivolcs advisory warned.

Aviation authorities have been cautioned to keep aircraft away from the volcano’s summit due to potential hazards from sudden eruptions.

The alert remains at Level 1, indicating low-level unrest but increased potential for future phreatic eruptions.
