A 36-year-old Filipino domestic worker who was arrested in Qatar for participating in an unauthorized rally will receive comprehensive government assistance, officials announced Monday.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed immediate financial aid was provided to the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) upon her return to Manila, marking the beginning of a support program aimed at her professional rehabilitation.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac stated the government will offer targeted assistance, including specialized training in culinary arts and accounting, reflecting a commitment to the worker’s future employment prospects.
The worker was among 17 adults and three minors detained on March 27 at a Doha resort. Following her arrest, she lost her employment, prompting her to seek help from Philippine diplomatic channels in Qatar.
Her case underscores the challenges faced by overseas Filipino workers, who number in the millions worldwide and often rely on international employment for economic stability.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration has emphasized prioritizing migrant workers’ welfare, with this intervention representing a practical implementation of that policy.
The worker, who previously worked in Kuwait from 2016 to 2019 before moving to Qatar, now looks toward rebuilding her professional career with government support.
