Residents of Hong Kong are bracing for the arrival of Typhoon Yagi, a powerful storm that is expected to skirt just southwest of the city on Friday morning, bringing damaging winds and heavy rains.
According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Yagi is currently a “super typhoon” and will remain at that intensity as it approaches the Pearl River Estuary. Gale force winds associated with the storm are forecast to lash the region starting tonight and continuing into Tuesday.
“We are expecting Yagi to bring very rough seas, squally showers, and sustained winds that could reach gale force,” said the observatory’s chief weather specialist, who asked not to be named. “The public needs to take this threat extremely seriously and follow all emergency instructions.”
In preparation for the storm, the Observatory will issue the Gale or Storm Signal, No. 8 at 6:20 p.m. this afternoon. Authorities have advised residents to secure loose outdoor items, clear drains, and avoid going near the coastline.
Small boat owners have been ordered to return their vessels to typhoon shelters immediately. Construction sites and property managers have also been told to brace their facilities for the high winds.
The intense outer rainbands of Yagi are expected to reach Hong Kong later today, setting the stage for a prolonged period of stormy weather. Forecasters warn that the worst conditions will likely occur on Tuesday morning as the storm’s center passes to the southwest.
“This is a dangerous situation that requires the full attention of everyone in the affected areas,” said the weather specialist. “We urge the public to listen to all official warnings and take the necessary precautions to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.”
