HONG KONG — Thousands of augmented reality gaming enthusiasts are preparing to descend on Hong Kong for a massive Pokemon GO “City Safari” event, transforming the metropolis into a sprawling virtual playground on December 7 and 8.
Approximately 10,000 players are expected to explore six distinctly themed areas across the city, from the historic streets of Kowloon City to the scenic landscapes of Cheung Chau, in pursuit of rare and exclusive Pokemon.
The event promises a unique urban adventure, with event-specific Pokemon appearing throughout multiple districts, including Sha Tin, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong Island, and Ngong Ping.
“This isn’t just a game—it’s a way to discover the city’s hidden gems,” said Sam Cheung Lok-hang, former Pokemon GO team leader. Cheung highlighted the event’s potential to showcase Hong Kong’s diverse attractions through strategically placed PokeStops that offer cultural and historical context.
A highlight for players will be the exclusive opportunity to capture Skiddo, a Pokemon not yet widely available globally, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board is providing comprehensive support, leveraging the event to promote tourism and showcase the city’s unique urban landscape through the lens of mobile gaming.
The City Safari event underscores the continued global popularity of Pokemon GO, which has transformed urban exploration into an interactive, digital experience since its launch in 2016.
