HONG KONG — Hong Kong’s sole railway operator, MTR Corporation, announced that train services on the Kwun Tong Line will be suspended this Sunday, July 28, as essential asset renewal works are carried out in the tunnels. The suspension will affect travel between Prince Edward and Ho Man Tin for the entire day.
During the maintenance, trains will continue to operate between Tiu Keng Leng and Prince Edward, as well as between Whampoa and Ho Man Tin. The affected stations, including Prince Edward, Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei, and Ho Man Tin, will remain accessible to passengers traveling on the Tsuen Wan and Tuen Ma lines.
MTR outlined that approximately 500 engineers will be mobilized to replace over 50 large metal hangers that support power cables in the tunnel, particularly near the crossover at Yau Ma Tei Station. The maintenance work is expected to last around 28 hours, with services set to resume on Monday, July 29.
To manage the anticipated increase in passenger flow, particularly at Prince Edward Station, MTR will implement crowd management measures. More than 1,000 staff members will be on hand to assist travelers throughout the day.
In a bid to ease commuting disruptions, MTR has partnered with Kowloon Motor Bus to offer free bus services connecting Yau Ma Tei to Ho Man Tin and Whampoa. Passengers can use the entire No. 8 bus route for free or access designated stops on the No. 30X route between Yau Ma Tei and Whampoa.
Looking ahead, MTR also indicated that similar maintenance projects will be scheduled for the Tung Chung Line later this year, with further updates to be provided in due course.
