Philippines Shines at Asian Kickboxing Championship

MANILA – The Philippines showcased its prowess in the martial arts arena, clinching an impressive 16 medals at the recent Asian Kickboxing Championship in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino, who also serves as the President of the Samahang Kickboxing ng Pilipinas (SKP), praised the athletes for their remarkable achievements, emphasizing their “skills, heart, and huge potential in the sport.”

Leading the charge was Jovan Medallo, who secured two gold medals, further solidifying the Philippines’ reputation in kickboxing. Notably, Hergie Bacyadan, Gina Araos, and Carlo Von Buminaang each contributed to the gold medal tally, highlighting the depth of talent within the team.

Tolentino specifically commended Bacyadan for her versatility, as she triumphed in the women’s 70-kilogram K1 division. Bacyadan’s credentials extend beyond kickboxing; she previously represented the Philippines in boxing at the Paris Olympics, and she has also earned accolades in vovinam and wushu, including a world championship title and a silver medal.

“Given sufficient training and support, Filipinos can be very competitive in combat sports, as Hergie Bacyadan has continuously proven,” Tolentino stated, underscoring the need for ongoing investment in athlete development.

The team also celebrated a silver medal from Honorio Banario, a former ONE Featherweight MMA World Champion, marking his return to competition through kickboxing. In addition to their gold and silver triumphs, the Philippine contingent secured 10 bronze medals, further demonstrating their competitiveness in this qualifying event for the upcoming 2025 World Games in China.

As the nation revels in this latest success, the spotlight remains on the potential of Filipino athletes in combat sports, promising a bright future for the sport in the Philippines.
