In a significant crackdown on corruption, Hong Kong police announced Thursday the arrest of 12 individuals, including seven police officers, on suspicion of money laundering involving approximately HK$10.5 million (about US$1.35 million).
The arrests were made by the Financial Intelligence and Investigation Bureau in multiple locations, including Sheung Shui, Fanling, Tuen Mun, and Kwai Chung. The suspects, eight men and four women, aged 28 to 68, are accused of laundering suspected criminal proceeds through 22 bank accounts from 2017 to 2022.
In a troubling twist, two of the arrested officers face additional charges of fraud. They allegedly rented out their mortgaged residential properties during the same time frame, raising further concerns about their conduct.
The police force confirmed that all seven arrested officers, aged between 28 and 39, have been suspended from duty pending the investigation. Authorities emphasized their commitment to upholding the integrity of the police force, stating that any officers found to have breached the law will face serious consequences.
“We attach great importance to the conduct of our officers,” a police spokesperson said. “Those who violate the law will not be tolerated.”
The operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat corruption within law enforcement and ensure accountability among public servants in Hong Kong. As investigations continue, officials are expected to provide further updates on the case.
