Mainland Man Arrested for Allegedly Kicking Dogs in Sai Ying Pun Park

Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park

A 68-year-old man from mainland China, identified only by his surname Zheng, was arrested Friday morning on suspicion of animal cruelty after allegedly kicking two dogs at the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park.

Police responded to a call around 8 a.m. from a dog owner who reported that a stranger had approached and kicked their pets without any provocation. Officers quickly arrived at the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation, leading to Zheng’s detention on suspicion of animal cruelty.

The case has since been transferred to the Western police district for further investigation.

The two dogs involved—an Irish Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, five years old, and a two-year-old Jack Russell Terrier—were assessed for injuries. While they did not display visible wounds, both were taken to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for a thorough examination and ongoing monitoring.

Animal cruelty cases have raised concerns among pet owners and animal rights advocates in Hong Kong, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting animals. The incident at Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park has sparked discussions about the welfare of pets and the responsibilities of their owners.

As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.
