Hong Kong Transport Department Launches Self-Service Kiosks for International Driving Permits

International Driving Permits

In a move aimed at streamlining the application process for International Driving Permits (IDP), the Transport Department has announced the introduction of self-service kiosks at its licensing offices on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon. The kiosks will be operational starting January 13, offering a convenient one-stop application and same-day collection service for residents.

The self-service kiosks will be situated at the Hong Kong Licensing Office and the Kowloon Licensing Office, and will be accessible to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. This initiative is designed to simplify the application process for eligible drivers, who must hold a valid Hong Kong identity card and a full, unexpired driving license, or one that has not been expired for more than three years.

To utilize the kiosks, applicants are required to make a reservation through the online booking system using their “iAM Smart+” account. Once at the kiosk, applicants will have the convenience of taking their photos on-site, providing proof of address, and making payments electronically.

The Transport Department has indicated that applicants will receive an SMS notification on their mobile phones when their IDP is ready for collection, typically within an hour of application. This rapid service aims to enhance the overall experience for drivers seeking international driving credentials.

While the new kiosks represent a significant advancement in the application process, the Transport Department has assured the public that existing application methods will remain unchanged. Drivers can still apply through the HKGov website, in person at licensing office counters, or via drop boxes and mail.

As the demand for International Driving Permits continues to grow, this innovative approach by the Transport Department underscores its commitment to improving public services and meeting the needs of Hong Kong residents.
