The world came to celebrate at the dazzling new Kai Tak Stadium on Friday, as the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens opened with a vibrant display that matched the historic occasion.
A crowd of 37,735 fans gathered to witness the tournament’s grand opening, which featured a breathtaking laser show and a festive atmosphere that marked a new chapter for both the iconic rugby event and the city itself. With over 130,000 tickets sold for the weekend, spectators are set for an exhilarating experience both on and off the pitch.
“Today we opened an exciting new chapter in the storied history of the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens,” said Chris Brooke, chairman of Hong Kong China Rugby. “It was an honor to finally open the Kai Tak Stadium for the fans who have played such an integral part in building that history.”
The first day of competition saw Argentina’s men and New Zealand’s women, both leaders in the HSBC SVNS Series, secure commanding victories. Argentina triumphed over Ireland (35-7) and the USA (52-5), while the New Zealand women dominated China (55-0) and the USA (33-21).
Local teams also shone brightly, with Hong Kong’s men defeating China (31-7) and the women overcoming Kazakhstan (29-14). Chong Ka-yan, who scored the first try for Hong Kong at the new venue, expressed her joy: “I was very pumped. My family and friends were out here cheering for us, and the feeling is just so amazing.”
The honor of scoring the inaugural try at Kai Tak went to Canadian player Fancy Bermudez, who crossed the line just two minutes into the day’s opening match against Japan. “I feel great,” she said. “Hong Kong’s one of my favorite stops ever, so I’m super grateful.”
The excitement doesn’t end on the pitch. Fans can look forward to performances from international artists including the Kaiser Chiefs and DJ Pete Tong, alongside a vibrant lineup of DJs and dance troupes at the newly designed Fan Village.
As the tournament continues, the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens stands as a proud “M” Mark event, further solidifying Hong Kong’s reputation as Asia’s sports event capital. With a thrilling weekend ahead, the stage is set for unforgettable moments in rugby history.
