ZHUHAI, China – A horrific act of violence rocked the city of Zhuhai, China on Monday night, as a man angry over his divorce settlement rammed his car into a crowd of people exercising at a local sports complex. The attack killed 35 and severely injured dozens more, leaving a community in mourning.
According to police, the 62-year-old suspect drove his vehicle directly into the crowd of hundreds who had gathered at the sports complex, a popular spot for residents to run, play sports, and dance. Graphic videos circulating on the social media platform X showed the chilling aftermath, with dozens of people lying motionless on the track as first responders rushed to provide aid.
“My foot is broken,” a distraught woman can be heard saying in one of the videos, as a firefighter performs CPR on an unresponsive individual nearby.
The attack came just a day before the opening of the People’s Liberation Army’s aviation exhibition in Zhuhai, leading authorities to quickly censor searches for information about the incident within China’s heavily restricted internet. However, social media users outside the country’s “Great Firewall” were able to document the tragedy.
Li Ying, a news blogger and dissident known on X as “Teacher Li,” shared one of the disturbing videos, providing a glimpse into the chaos and devastation that unfolded.
Police reported that the suspect, whose identity has not been released, was detained shortly after the attack and is currently being treated for self-inflicted wounds. The motive appears to be related to the man’s dissatisfaction with the outcome of his divorce settlement. (sources: Agencies, AP, Reuters)
