A severe winter monsoon is set to plunge temperatures across Hong Kong’s New Territories to a bone-chilling 7 degrees Celsius, with health experts warning of an impending flu season that could peak around the Lunar New Year.

The Hong Kong Observatory predicts a dramatic temperature drop, with urban areas expected to experience readings as low as 12 degrees. Outlying regions like Ta Kwu Ling will see even more extreme cold, with temperatures bottoming out at a mere 7 degrees on Saturday.

Infectious disease specialists from the University of Hong Kong are sounding the alarm about a potential flu outbreak. Dr. Ivan Hung Fan-ngai reports that influenza activity has already reached the World Health Organization’s baseline level, with a concerning upward trajectory.

“We’re seeing increased hospitalizations, particularly among elderly patients with chronic conditions,” Hung said. Of particular concern is a rising infection rate among children under five, with the possibility of a “double peak season” involving different influenza strains.

Dr. Leo Poon Lit-man, a public health virology expert, added another layer of caution, highlighting the emergence of a new flu variant and urging high-risk individuals to seek vaccination immediately.

Health officials recommend residents take precautions, including vaccination, especially before the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations. While children’s vaccination rates have improved slightly, they remain below recommended standards.

As temperatures drop and flu risks rise, Hong Kong residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary health precautions.
