Starting January 15, residents in Hong Kong can earn up to HK$3,000 for reporting illegal use of public housing, as announced by the Housing Authority on Wednesday. This initiative, dubbed the Report Public Housing Abuse Award scheme, aims to protect the integrity of public housing resources by encouraging community involvement in identifying misuse.

The program is open to individuals aged 16 and older, who can submit reports via various channels including online forms, hotlines, emails, and at estate offices. The Housing Authority emphasized the importance of public participation in identifying cases that may otherwise remain concealed.

An assessment panel will evaluate the reported cases, particularly those that may involve more complex circumstances. While informants’ identities will be kept confidential, they are required to provide their real names when submitting a report and may need to participate in follow-up interviews.

“The HA has seen success in uncovering easily detectable tenancy abuses since implementing new measures,” the authority stated. “However, to address the remaining hidden cases, we need more investigative leads from the public.”

This program not only aims to deter abuse but also fosters a sense of community responsibility among residents. By incentivizing the reporting of misuse, the Housing Authority hopes to enhance the fair distribution of public housing resources, ensuring that they serve the families who genuinely need them.

As the initiative rolls out, it will be closely monitored to assess its effectiveness and the level of public engagement in safeguarding Hong Kong’s public housing system.
