Hong Kong Braces for Weekend Thunderstorm

Residents of Hong Kong should prepare for a wet weekend as showers and thunderstorms are expected due to a broad trough of low pressure affecting the region. The Hong Kong Observatory issued an amber rainstorm warning early Saturday morning, signaling potential hazardous weather conditions.

The warning was announced at 5:35 a.m. and later lifted at 10:55 a.m. However, the city experienced significant rainfall during that period, with more than 50mm (approximately 2 inches) recorded across various areas. In some urban regions, totals exceeded 100mm, particularly on Lantau Island and Cheung Chau.

In light of the severe weather, the observatory urged residents to remain vigilant and seek shelter, as strong gusts could persist. “Under the influence of a broad trough of low pressure, the weather will be unsettled over the coast of southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea in the coming days,” the forecaster stated.

The forecast indicates that while the weekend will be marked by thunderstorms, conditions are expected to improve later next week as the subtropical ridge extends westward, bringing hotter weather to Guangdong.

As Hongkongers navigate the stormy weather, local authorities are advising caution and preparedness, emphasizing the importance of staying indoors during the most intense periods of rainfall.
