Hong Kong Domestic Worker Charged In Hk$1.6 Million Jewelry Theft

Filipino domestic helper accused of $1.6m jewelry theft

A Filipino domestic worker appeared in a Hong Kong court Thursday on charges of stealing more than HK$1.6 million (approximately US$205,000) worth of jewelry from her employer’s home, as a magistrate denied bail and ordered her held in custody.

Caalem Rogela Magquilat, 33, was brought before Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Courts on a single theft charge. She was not required to enter a plea during the proceeding.

According to prosecutors, Magquilat is accused of stealing 19 pieces of jewelry from a detached house on Fei Ngo Shan Road in the Tseung Kwan O district of Hong Kong over a period spanning roughly six months — from Jan. 1 to June 26, 2026.

Magistrate Betty Lau Suk-han granted a prosecution request to adjourn the case until Aug. 27 to allow for further investigation. Magquilat was remanded in custody and a bail review hearing was set for July 10.

No further details regarding the nature of the alleged theft or the circumstances of the arrest were disclosed in court.

The case remains under investigation. Magquilat has not yet entered a plea, and no conviction has been established.
