Typhoon Signal No. 8 to be issued between midnight and 2am on Sunday

The Hong Kong Observatory announced late Saturday that it will issue a Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 between midnight and 2 a.m. on Sunday, as Tropical Storm Wipha approaches the Pearl River Estuary, threatening the region with powerful winds and potential flooding.

Shum Chi-tai, the acting senior scientific officer at the Observatory, warned that local winds are expected to escalate to gale or storm force, posing significant risks. “Adverse weather will persist during the day [on Sunday],” Shum said, urging residents to prepare for deteriorating conditions.

The Observatory is closely monitoring Wipha’s trajectory and intensity, with the possibility of escalating to higher tropical cyclone warning signals by Sunday morning. “Depending on the distance between Wipha and Hong Kong, whether Wipha will further intensify into a typhoon, and the change in local wind conditions, we will assess the need for stronger warnings,” Shum explained.

High seas and swells are forecast, prompting authorities to issue advisories for residents to steer clear of shorelines and avoid water sports. Low-lying coastal areas face the risk of flooding, adding to concerns for communities in vulnerable zones.

As Hong Kong braces for impact, residents are urged to secure loose objects, stock up on essentials, and stay updated on the latest weather advisories. The city, no stranger to tropical storms, is gearing up for a challenging day as Wipha draws near.
