The Hong Kong Observatory issued an urgent Red Rain and Amber Storm Warning Thursday morning, signaling potentially dangerous precipitation less than seven hours after previous storm signals were lowered.
The meteorological agency reported heavy rainfall exceeding 30 millimeters per hour across the territory, stemming from the remnants of tropical cyclone Danas sweeping through eastern Guangdong.
Wednesday night’s weather system escalated rapidly, with warnings progressing from amber to red before being completely cancelled by 1:40 a.m. Thursday. Forecasters cautioned residents about potential flooding in low-lying and poorly drained urban areas.
An active southwest monsoon positioning south of the region is expected to impact the Pearl River Estuary through Thursday and Friday, promising continued turbulent conditions with torrential rain and thunderstorms.
The Observatory remains on high alert, monitoring wind patterns and preparing to activate the Strong Monsoon Signal if local wind conditions deteriorate.
Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the tropical system continues to influence regional weather patterns.
