Tropical Cyclone Danas is expected to move slowly across the northeastern South China Sea, passing approximately 400 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong through today and Saturday morning, July 6, according to the latest forecast from the Hong Kong Observatory. The cyclone is projected to pick up speed and head northeast toward the western coast of Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait thereafter.
The Observatory reported that Danas, with its relatively small circulation, is unlikely to bring strong winds to Hong Kong unless it intensifies significantly and shifts closer to the Pearl River Estuary. As a result, the chance of escalating to higher tropical cyclone warning signals remains low, and the Standby Signal No. 1 will stay in effect throughout Friday.
Alongside the cyclone’s passage, Hong Kong is bracing for scorching weather, with temperatures expected to climb to 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher in parts of the territory today and tomorrow. The heat is also likely to spark showers and squally thunderstorms, adding to the region’s weather challenges.
Swells associated with Danas have prompted warnings from authorities, urging the public to avoid shorelines and refrain from water sports. The Observatory advised residents to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins to ensure safety.
