Authorities have arrested the driver of a tram involved in a tragic accident that resulted in the death of a three-year-old girl in the Western District on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 a.m. as the tram was traveling eastbound along Praya, Kennedy Town. As it approached a pedestrian crossing near Des Voeux Road West, it struck four individuals who were crossing the road.
The young girl was trapped beneath the tram and was rushed to Queen Mary Hospital in an unconscious state. Sadly, she was pronounced dead around 12:30 p.m. The accident also left a six-year-old girl, a 34-year-old woman, and a 66-year-old man injured, all of whom were treated at the same hospital.
In the aftermath, police arrested the 48-year-old male driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. He is currently in custody as investigations continue.
Hong Kong Tramways stated that, based on their preliminary assessment, the tram was operating normally at the time of the incident. The company has suspended the driver pending the results of the investigation.
The Transport Department expressed deep concern over the accident, urging the tramway operator to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a detailed report as soon as possible.
