The MTR Corporation suspended Island Line services between Sheung Wan and Quarry Bay stations Wednesday morning after an object obstructed the tracks near Wan Chai Station, disrupting rush-hour travel across central Hong Kong Island.
Trains continued operating on the unaffected segments — between Kennedy Town and Sheung Wan, and between Quarry Bay and Chai Wan — at reduced 10-minute intervals. The MTR urged commuters to use alternative transport and provided free shuttle buses linking Sheung Wan and Quarry Bay.
The disruption caused delays and crowding at affected stations, with passengers rerouting via other lines such as Tsuen Wan, South Island, or East Rail to reach key areas like Central and Admiralty. No injuries were reported, and the nature of the object was not specified.
Services resumed after the obstruction was cleared, highlighting the MTR’s emphasis on safety in a system relied upon by millions daily. While such incidents are uncommon, they underscore occasional vulnerabilities in Hong Kong’s vital rail network.
