In 2025, personal remittances from Overseas Filipino Workers continue to be a vital source of foreign exchange and a key driver of the Philippine economy.
The infographic provides a comprehensive overview of the vital role Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) play in the Philippine economy. Based on data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for January to October 2025, total cash remittances reached $29.2 billion, representing a 3.2% year-on-year growth. When including in-kind contributions, total personal remittances climbed to $32.5 billion. These funds are a cornerstone of the national economy, supporting approximately 73% of household consumption.
The monthly trends for 2025 show a steady climb, starting at $2.7 billion in January and peaking at $3.2 billion in October. Notable seasonal increases are observed during the middle and end of the year, driven by funding needs for school tuition and holiday celebrations. The United States remains the primary source of these funds, accounting for a massive 40.3% of total cash remittances, followed by Singapore (7.2%), Saudi Arabia (6.4%), Japan (4.9%), the United Kingdom (4.7%), and the UAE (4.5%).
Remittances represent a significant portion of the Philippines’ GDP, around 8.3% in 2024, and are expected to remain resilient despite global economic challenges. The annual growth rate of OFW remittances has averaged 3-5% over the past two decades, demonstrating strong stability even during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.
There are concerns about potential impacts from proposed remittance taxes in the US, such as a 1% excise tax on cash remittances, but experts believe the overall effect on remittance flows and the Philippine economy will be minimal. Many OFWs are expected to use digital and bank transfer channels that may be exempt from such taxes.
Overall, OFW remittances continue to be a “foolproof engine of growth” for the Philippines, providing critical support to families and contributing significantly to national economic stability and development.
