As the Lunar New Year approaches, Hong Kong is poised to welcome approximately 1.45 million mainland visitors, a promising 15 percent increase from last year and nearing 90 percent of pre-pandemic levels, according to the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong (TIC).
The peak travel period is expected to occur from January 30 to February 1, when daily inbound travelers from the mainland could reach as high as 210,000. This surge coincides with the eight-day Golden Week holiday, a vital time for tourism in the region.
Most visitors are expected to arrive under the individual travel scheme, but over 2,000 tour groups will contribute to the influx, accounting for about five percent of total visitors. Notably, around 70 percent of these tour groups plan to stay overnight, primarily for just one night. With hotel occupancy rates projected to approach 90 percent, the hospitality sector is gearing up for a bustling holiday season.
Fanny Yeung Shuk-fan, the Executive Director of TIC, expressed optimism about the anticipated foot traffic. She highlighted the excitement surrounding planned events, including a vibrant night parade and a spectacular fireworks display, which are set to attract both tourists and locals alike.
The anticipated increase in visitors marks a significant step toward recovery for Hong Kong’s tourism sector, which has faced challenges in recent years. As the city prepares for the festivities, stakeholders remain hopeful that the Lunar New Year will usher in a new era of revitalization for the local economy, fostering a sense of community and celebration.
