A dramatic police chase through the streets of Hong Kong ended in a violent crash that left two people injured, including an officer, authorities said Friday.

The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. when police attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle in the Wong Tai Sin neighborhood. The driver refused to pull over, sparking a 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) pursuit that culminated in a residential area of Ho Man Tin.

Video footage posted online shows officers with guns drawn and batons at the ready as they approached the car, which had become stuck after the driver made a last-ditch effort to evade the roadblock.

Undeterred, the driver suddenly accelerated, slamming into a police officer standing behind the vehicle and crashing into another car. Officers were eventually able to smash the windows and subdue the suspect.

“The officer hit by the car suffered injuries to his abdomen and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition,” a police spokesman said.

A woman driving one of the other vehicles involved was also hospitalized with a neck injury, authorities added.

According to a source familiar with the investigation, suspected illegal drugs were found in the suspect’s car. The Kowloon City district crime squad is now handling the case.

The dramatic chase underscores the dangers faced by Hong Kong’s law enforcement as they work to maintain order in the bustling Asian financial hub. Though details remain limited, this incident is sure to reverberate throughout the city in the days to come.
