HONG KONG — The ART021 HONG KONG Contemporary Art Fair has officially kicked off, showcasing an impressive array of artworks from nearly 90 galleries across 13 countries and regions. Running until September 8, this event is poised to be one of the largest art fairs in Asia, with over 20,000 art enthusiasts pre-registered to attend.

Among the standout exhibits is a captivating collection of large dolls crafted by an American artist. Each doll features a unique design aimed at evoking childlike joy, inviting viewers to reconnect with their youthful spirits. This whimsical installation is just one of the many highlights at the fair.

Another iconic piece making its debut in Hong Kong is the renowned “LOVE” sculpture, a powerful representation of universal human emotions. Its presence at the fair marks a significant moment for both the artist and the local art community.

In a more surreal vein, the installation “Sofa Man” transforms everyday products into a thought-provoking exploration of the human body, challenging perceptions and inviting dialogue among attendees.

The fair is organized into five primary sections: Sculpture, Galleries, Videos, Expansion, and the concurrent Greater Bay Area Art Week, which features participation from 42 galleries. This structure not only showcases diverse mediums but also emphasizes the dynamic nature of contemporary art.

According to the Census & Statistics Department, Hong Kong ranks among the top three art trading centers globally, with a total trade value of approximately $105.5 billion for works of art, collectors’ pieces, and antiques. This impressive statistic underscores the city’s vital role in the international art market.

David Chau, co-founder of the ART021 Group, highlighted the strategic advantages of hosting the fair in Hong Kong. “We came to Hong Kong because we think the infrastructure here is great for the whole economy,” Chau stated. “In terms of its art ecosystem, everything is mature here as well. There are a lot of great collectors.”

Chau emphasized that the fair not only bolsters Hong Kong’s position as a hub for East-West art exchange but also enhances the city’s influence and soft power in the global art landscape. The event aims to feature galleries from the Global South, including those from Mainland Asia, Africa, and South America, further enriching the artistic dialogue.

As the ART021 HONG KONG Contemporary Art Fair unfolds, it promises to be a vibrant convergence of creativity, culture, and commerce, reaffirming the city’s status as a pivotal player in the world of contemporary art.
