Hong Kong is set to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China with an unprecedented array of celebratory activities, officials announced Thursday.
Chief Secretary Chan Kwok-ki revealed plans for more than 400 events designed to foster patriotism and public engagement during a press conference, highlighting the special significance of this year’s National Day celebrations.
“This National Day holds extra meaning as we commemorate 75 years since the founding of our nation,” Chan said. “It’s also the first celebration since Hong Kong improved its district governance and enacted Article 23 legislation.”
The festivities will kick off on September 30 with a large-scale chorus performance at the West Kowloon Cultural District, featuring a record-breaking drone show. The display will utilize 2,099 drones to symbolize the year 2024 and the 75th anniversary.
On October 1, the day will begin with an official flag-raising ceremony and reception, culminating in a grand fireworks display over Victoria Harbour in the evening.
In a bid to boost local economy and public participation, the government has coordinated with various sectors to offer special discounts and promotions. Public transportation will see significant price cuts, with free rides on trams and select ferries, and discounts on MTR services.
Cultural institutions are joining the celebration, with free entry to many museums and leisure facilities. Commercial entities, including cinemas, restaurants, and retail outlets, will offer substantial discounts to encourage public participation and consumption.
Chan emphasized the diverse nature of the planned activities, stating, “We’ve curated a wide array of rich, diverse, and creative events for citizens to share in the joy of National Day.”
As Hong Kong continues to align more closely with mainland China, these extensive celebrations underscore the city’s commitment to fostering national identity and patriotic sentiment among its residents.
The scale and scope of the festivities reflect the government’s efforts to create a festive atmosphere while simultaneously stimulating local economic activity in the wake of recent challenges.
