Hong Kong Cracks Down On Cross-Border Illegal Workers, Makes Eight Arrests

Hong Kong’s Immigration Department has launched a targeted operation against illegal mainland workers, arresting eight individuals who were providing unauthorized cross-boundary services through social media platforms.

The week-long operation, conducted from January 13 to 20, targeted mainland visitors advertising tour guide and delivery services without proper work permits. Immigration officers strategically posed as customers to identify and apprehend the suspects.

The arrested group, comprising four men and four women aged between 19 and 52, were caught providing services in violation of their visa conditions. Seven of the eight suspects have already pleaded guilty and received prison sentences ranging from 56 days to two months.

“The department will continue strengthening enforcement actions against illegal employment,” an Immigration Department spokesman said, warning that unauthorized workers face significant legal consequences, including fines up to $50,000 and potential two-year imprisonment terms.

The crackdown extends beyond workers to employers, with penalties dramatically increased to reflect the offense’s severity. Companies found employing unauthorized workers could face fines up to $500,000 and 10-year imprisonment sentences.

Employers are explicitly required to verify workers’ legal status, including thorough document inspections and background checks. Failure to do so offers no legal protection in prosecution proceedings.

This operation signals Hong Kong’s increasingly stringent approach to managing cross-border labor practices and maintaining strict immigration control.
