Hong Kong Braces for Heavy Showers and Thunderstorms Starting Wednesday

Residents of Hong Kong are preparing for a week of wet and stormy weather as the Hong Kong Observatory forecasts heavy showers and squally thunderstorms starting Wednesday, May 28, and continuing through at least Tuesday, June 3.

The Observatory reported Sunday that a trough of low pressure is expected to move southwards, gradually approaching the coast of southern China. By the latter part of the week, this weather system will settle over the northern part of the South China Sea, bringing persistent unsettled conditions to the region.

According to the Observatory’s nine-day forecast, showers accompanied by squally thunderstorms will begin Wednesday, with the heaviest rainfall expected on Thursday, May 29. The downpours are likely to intensify at times, potentially disrupting daily activities across the city.

While the most intense weather is anticipated midweek, the Observatory cautioned that showers will persist through the weekend and into early June. “We expect a few showers to continue affecting the city for the rest of the week, lasting until at least next Tuesday,” a spokesperson for the Observatory said.

Authorities are urging residents to stay updated on weather alerts and take precautions, particularly during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms, which could lead to localized flooding or hazardous conditions. The public is advised to secure outdoor items, avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding, and stay tuned to official updates from the Observatory.

The prolonged rainy spell comes as Hong Kong transitions into its wet season, a period often marked by humid conditions and frequent showers. Meteorologists noted that the trough’s lingering presence could exacerbate rainfall, potentially impacting transportation and outdoor events across the city.
