Global IT Outage Causes Flight Delays at Hong Kong International Airport

A major IT outage linked to Microsoft’s cloud computing services has caused significant disruptions at Hong Kong International Airport, leading to flight delays and forcing passengers to endure long queues as airlines resort to manual check-in procedures.

As of Friday evening, the Airport Authority reported that more than a dozen flights from five airlines, including HK Express, have been delayed due to the global computer glitch. The authority did not disclose the names of the other affected airlines.

While flight operations remain largely unaffected, the Airport Authority has activated its emergency response mechanism. A spokesman for the authority stated, “Some airlines have switched to manual check-in to continue serving passengers.” Travelers are advised to allow extra time for check-in procedures and stay alert to updates.

The disruption appears to be part of a wider global issue affecting Microsoft’s cloud-based services. Airlines and airport operators in Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and India have also reported similar problems.

George Kurtz, president and CEO of American cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, clarified on social media that the outage was caused by a software update defect affecting Windows hosts. He emphasized that it was not a cyberattack or security incident, and that Mac and Linux systems were unaffected.

Several airlines known to use Navitaire, an e-commerce solution provider, have been impacted. These include IndiGo, Scoot, Air Asia, Jeju Air, and Cebu Pacific, in addition to HK Express.

Hong Kong authorities have not received reports of disruptions to government computer systems, according to a government source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk has been tasked with monitoring the situation as it develops.

The Airport Authority continues to maintain close communication with airlines and urges passengers to check their flight status with their respective carriers and allow ample time to reach the airport.

As the situation unfolds, travelers are encouraged to stay informed and prepare for potential delays in their travel plans.
