Elderly, Chronically Ill Urged to Take Precautions Amid Hong Kong’s Cold Snap

Health officials in Hong Kong are warning the elderly and those with chronic illnesses to take extra measures to protect themselves as the city endures a cold weather snap.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health issued the advisory on Friday, noting that plunging temperatures can easily exacerbate existing medical conditions, especially among the most vulnerable populations.

“Elderly people have less insulating fat beneath their skin to keep them warm, and their body temperature control mechanisms may be weaker. Their body may not be able to appropriately respond to the cold weather,” a CHP spokesman said.

Senior citizens, particularly those with decreased mobility, are at heightened risk, as they may struggle to generate and conserve enough body heat. Chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and heart or respiratory illnesses can further undermine the health of the elderly and reduce their metabolic rate, causing them to generate less heat.

“Persons with chronic illnesses, such as chronic respiratory illnesses or heart disease, are vulnerable to disease aggravation due to cold weather,” the spokesman added.

Health officials are urging the public, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, to bundle up, stay indoors as much as possible, and ensure their homes are adequately heated. They also recommend eating warm meals, drinking hot fluids, and engaging in light exercise to maintain body temperature.

The advisory comes as Hong Kong braces for plummeting temperatures in the coming days, with the mercury expected to dip as low as 12 degrees Celsius (54 Fahrenheit) – a relative chill in a city more accustomed to subtropical climates.

Experts caution that the combination of cold weather and underlying health issues can pose serious risks, potentially leading to hypothermia, pneumonia, and other life-threatening complications. They are encouraging vulnerable residents to be vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms of illness or distress.
