Deadly Storm Kristine Batters the Philippines, Death Toll Rises to 13

MANILA — The death toll from the effects of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, known internationally as Trami, has climbed to 13, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Friday.

According to the disaster response agency’s latest situation report, 11 of the fatalities occurred in the Bicol region, one in Central Visayas, and one in Calabarzon. Only the Calabarzon fatality has been officially confirmed so far, with the others still under validation.

The report also noted seven missing persons – five in Bicol, one in Calabarzon, and one in the Ilocos region – as well as five injured individuals, four in Bicol and one in the Bangsamoro Administrative Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

In total, the storm impacted 569,524 families or 2,656,466 people residing in 3,483 villages across 15 regions of the Philippines. Of those affected, 64,447 families or 239,200 people are taking shelter in 5,791 evacuation centers, while another 19,961 families or 80,497 individuals are receiving assistance outside of the centers.

The NDRRMC also reported 1,402 houses were damaged in 11 regions as a result of the severe weather.

Kristine, known internationally as Trami, made landfall in the Philippines on October 22nd as a tropical storm, bringing heavy rains and strong winds that triggered floods and landslides across several regions. The storm has since weakened but continues to affect parts of the country.

Disaster response teams remain active, conducting search and rescue operations as well as providing shelter, food, and other emergency relief to those impacted by the deadly storm.
