Dinosaur Fossils Discovered in Hong Kong

HONG KONG – The first-ever dinosaur fossils found in Hong Kong went on display at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre on Friday, drawing eager crowds of fascinated locals.

Earlier this week, officials announced the remarkable discovery of the ancient Cretaceous-period fossils on Port Island in the northeastern waters of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. As the fossils were unveiled in Kowloon Park, residents young and old gathered to catch a glimpse of this historic find.

“It’s amazing to see the fossils,” said Chong Got, one of the first to arrive. “When I was young, going to the museum and seeing just a small piece of stone with a fossil…it’s already amazing enough. But here we are talking about dinosaurs, millions of years old. It really would be an amazing opportunity to open my eyes.”

Nearby, Rick Dong expressed his excitement at the prospect of Hong Kong developing its own paleontological research. “It’s a very good operation, because for science, there’s no boundary,” he said. “We should work together with scientists from all over the world to develop and do research.”

For many parents, the exhibition presented an invaluable educational opportunity. Gavin Kwai brought his six-year-old son Joshua, who had long wondered if dinosaurs could be found in Hong Kong. “It’s a very good chance for them to learn,” Kwai said. “Before, we would have to disappoint them by saying these fossils are from other countries. But now we can truly discover something in Hong Kong.”

The Hong Heritage Discovery Centre’s assistant curator, Ringo Ng, said staff will be on hand to provide explanations of the fossils, with the hope of installing permanent guides in the future. As the public marvels at this prehistoric treasure trove, Hong Kong’s scientific community eagerly awaits the insights these fossils may yield about the region’s ancient past.
