Hong Kong’s Cultural Spotlight to Shine at Art Basel Shows Globally

Art Basel and HKTB during the press conference
Mr. Dane Cheng, HKTB Executive Director, and Mr. Noah Horowitz, CEO, Art Basel, announced a new global partnership between Art Basel and HKTB during the press conference of Art Basel in Basel held on June 11, 2024

In a landmark move for international art and tourism, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has entered into a three-year partnership with Art Basel, becoming the first tourism organization to formalize such a collaboration. This strategic alliance will see Hong Kong’s vibrant culture highlighted at all four annual Art Basel shows in Paris, Miami Beach, Basel, and the Special Administrative Region (SAR) itself.

The announcement, made jointly by the tourism board and Art Basel, marks a significant expansion of their previous collaborations, extending the connection beyond Hong Kong to a global audience. The partnership, officially signed by HKTB’s executive director Dane Cheng Ting-yat and Art Basel CEO Noah Horowitz on Tuesday, aims to provide immersive cultural experiences at each art fair, showcasing the unique character of Hong Kong.

“This collaboration with Art Basel underscores HKTB’s continuous efforts in promoting Hong Kong on the global stage,” said Cheng. “By sharing the city’s unique character through immersive experiences on the world’s most prestigious art platform, we hope to inspire travelers to visit our city and discover its thriving creative community and rich cultural experiences.”

Horowitz echoed the sentiment, expressing enthusiasm for the initiative. “We are thrilled to build on our long-standing collaboration with HKTB and launch this ambitious initiative,” he said. “By shining a global spotlight on Hong Kong’s vibrant art scene, this partnership will enhance the experience for our fair visitors while unlocking new opportunities and fostering deeper connections between Hong Kong and art communities around the world.”

The collaboration will debut at Art Basel Paris, held at the Grand Palais from October 18 to 20. This event will mark the first international initiative under the new agreement, promising to deliver an immersive experience that captures the essence of Hong Kong’s cultural landscape.

Art Basel Hong Kong, which made its debut in 2013 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, has served as a cornerstone of the city’s artistic calendar. Since 2020, HKTB and Art Basel have teamed up on various projects, enhancing the fair’s appeal and promoting Hong Kong’s cultural offerings.

One notable collaboration was the “Cha Chaan Teng” cafe experience at the last Art Basel Hong Kong from March 28 to 30. The initiative allowed visitors to savor regional specialties like pineapple buns and milk tea while exploring the city’s unique fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, as showcased by local non-profit organizations.

With this new global partnership, HKTB and Art Basel are set to elevate Hong Kong’s cultural narrative, making it a focal point at some of the world’s most prestigious art events.
