MANILA, Philippines — Long before the opening whistle in Brazil, the Philippine women’s national football team has begun preparing for its next chance at history.
The Filipinas, who made their first appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in (2023), are turning their attention toward qualifying for the expanded 2027 tournament in Brazil. The campaign represents an opportunity to build on a breakthrough that transformed the profile of women’s football in the Philippines.
In Australia and New Zealand three years ago, the Filipinas recorded the country’s first World Cup victory in any major FIFA tournament, defeating co-host New Zealand 1-0. The result drew widespread attention at home and established the team as a rising force in Asian women’s football.
Qualification for Brazil will again require the Philippines to navigate a demanding Asian pathway, with leading regional teams including Japan, Australia, North Korea, South Korea and China expected to contend for places. FIFA has expanded the Women’s World Cup to 32 teams, but the competition for Asia’s available slots remains intense.
The Philippine Football Federation and the national team are expected to focus on player development, international friendlies and regional competition as part of their preparations. The squad’s pool includes players based in the Philippines and overseas, a structure that helped fuel its run to the (2023) World Cup.
For many Filipino fans, the 2027 tournament may still feel distant. But for the players and staff, the work has already begun — with the goal of returning to football’s biggest stage and proving that their landmark 2023 appearance was not a one-time achievement.
