Hong Kong Sevens marks 50th anniversary with festive kickoff at Kai Tak

The Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens opened its 50th edition on Friday with its trademark mix of top-tier rugby and party atmosphere, as thousands of fans packed Kai Tak Sports Park despite the workday start.

The three-day tournament, now in its second year at the Kai Tak Main Stadium, began with strong early attendance, with crowds filling the stands by midafternoon and generating a lively buzz across the venue.

Long known as one of the sport’s most festive stops, the Sevens once again delivered a carnival-like scene. Beer flowed freely and fans in elaborate costumes added to the spectacle, reinforcing the event’s reputation as much for celebration as for competition.

The South Stand, synonymous with the tournament’s rowdiest supporters, quickly came to life as fans arrived early to secure spots for a day of cheering and socializing. Costumes ranged from whimsical to eye-catching, including one expatriate fan dressed as a giant beer and a group portraying characters from the “Super Mario” franchise.

The event’s distinctive blend of sport and entertainment continues to attract visitors from around the world. Among them was a fan originally from Fiji and now based in Perth, Australia, who traveled to Hong Kong with five friends for a five-day trip centered on supporting the Fijian team.

“This is my first time coming to Hong Kong for the Sevens,” he said. “I grew up watching this tournament, so to be here in person is a real honor.”

Holding a three-day pass, he said he planned to explore different sections of the stadium on the opening day to take in the full atmosphere. He and his group also prepared multiple costumes for the weekend, aiming to bring something new each day.

Asked about the event’s well-known drinking culture, he laughed off the idea of setting limits.

“The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the incredible matches,” he said.

The tournament continues through Sunday, with organizers expecting attendance and festivities to build over the weekend.
