Hong Kong will make sports history next month, becoming the first city in East Asia to host the prestigious Saudi Super Cup, a tournament set to feature a dazzling array of global football stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. The announcement has ignited a wave of excitement across the city, with tickets for the high-profile event going on sale next week.
The four-team tournament will take place from August 19 to August 23 at the 40,000-seat Hong Kong Stadium. Organizers Sum KM Sport confirmed the details at a press conference, revealing that ticket prices will range from HK$499 to HK$2,990. Football enthusiasts can purchase their tickets starting at noon on Tuesday, July 15, through the online platform Klook.
The competition is a collaboration between the Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF). It is part of a broader push by Saudi Arabia to expand the international footprint of its domestic football competitions.
The tournament will kick off on August 19 with a highly anticipated clash between two of the sport’s modern legends, as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr faces off against Karim Benzema’s Al Ittihad. The following day, Al Qadsiah will take on Al Hilal. The winners of these semifinal matches will then compete for the championship title in the final on August 23.
The star-studded rosters of the participating clubs have fueled high anticipation for the event. Beyond Ronaldo and Benzema, the teams feature a host of international talent, including Sadio Mané of Al Nassr and N’Golo Kanté of Al Ittihad.
Eric Fok Kai-shan, chairman of the HKFA, described the hosting of the Super Cup as a “major milestone for sports development in Hong Kong” and a testament to the strengthening ties between Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia. The event follows a memorandum of understanding signed between the two football federations last November. Yasser Al Misehal, president of the SAFF, echoed these sentiments, calling the tournament a reflection of the “strong and growing partnership” with Hong Kong.
Officials have emphasized that as a competitive tournament, not a series of friendly matches, all four clubs are expected to bring their strongest lineups to vie for the cup. In addition to the on-pitch action, the Saudi teams are scheduled to participate in community visits and cultural exchanges, offering fans further opportunities to engage with the players.
This marks only the second time the Saudi Super Cup has been held outside of Saudi Arabia, with London having previously hosted the event. The decision to bring the tournament to Hong Kong underscores the city’s growing reputation as a premier destination for international sporting events.
