Urgent Support for OFWs Continues Despite Election Restrictions

Election 2025 Restrictions

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has secured a critical exemption from election spending restrictions, ensuring uninterrupted welfare services for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) during the upcoming national elections.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac announced Monday that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) granted the agency permission to continue seven key programs typically prohibited during the 45-day pre-election spending freeze.

The exemption covers vital assistance initiatives including the AKSYON Fund, reintegration programs, livelihood development, and wellness support for migrant workers and their families.

“These services are urgent and essential,” Cacdac emphasized, underscoring the critical nature of continued support for the millions of Filipinos working abroad.

Comelec approved the exemption with stringent safeguards to prevent potential electoral misconduct. Guidelines include barring political candidates from aid distributions and mandating regular reporting to regional election officials.

The decision ensures that critical services such as employment facilitation, job fairs, and overseas deployments will continue uninterrupted. Cacdac stressed that urgent worker needs cannot be suspended during the electoral period.

“If someone needs to be deployed abroad, they shouldn’t have to wait until after the elections,” Cacdac said, highlighting the time-sensitive nature of migrant worker support.

The exemption reflects the Philippine government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of its overseas workforce, which contributes significantly to the national economy through remittances and international labor contributions.

As the May 12 elections approach, the DMW’s proactive approach ensures that OFWs and their families will continue to receive essential support and services.
