Powerful Earthquake Jolts Philippines’ Catanduanes Island

Magnitude 6.1 quake jolts Catanduanes

MANILA, Philippines – A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the province of Catanduanes in the Philippines on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The tectonic quake hit 76 kilometers northeast of the town of Bagamanoc at 5:19 a.m. local time, with a depth of 38 kilometers.

The tremor was felt as far as the neighboring provinces, with Intensity IV reported in the city of Virac, Catanduanes and Tabaco City in Albay. Intensity III was felt in several towns across the Camarines provinces and Sorsogon.

“Aftershocks are likely, but we do not expect significant damage from this magnitude 6.1 earthquake,” said Phivolcs director Renato Solidum.

Intensity is the traditional way of measuring the strength of an earthquake based on reports from those who felt the shaking. Instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that records ground acceleration.

Though no major damage has been reported so far, the strong shaking would have rattled nerves in a region still recovering from the devastation of previous natural disasters. The Philippines lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making it prone to frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

Residents are advised to stay alert for aftershocks and to follow updates from local authorities. Phivolcs will continue to monitor the situation closely in the affected areas.
