HONG KONG — The Migrant Workers Office and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (MWO-OWWA) launched Phase 1 of its OFW Global Centre in Hong Kong on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in support services for Filipino migrant workers.
The 20,000-square-foot facility, situated in Hong Kong’s prime Admiralty district, opened its doors to throngs of Filipino workers who gathered to witness the inauguration of what officials describe as a “one-stop service hub” for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
OWWA Hong Kong Welfare Officer Marilou M. Sumalinog led the opening ceremonies, emphasizing the center’s role beyond recreation. “This facility represents our commitment to addressing the urgent needs of our modern-day heroes, from financial concerns to mental health support,” Sumalinog said.
The center’s strategic location in the United Centre building addresses long-standing accessibility issues faced by OFWs, who previously had to travel to remote locations for similar services.
Among the key features unveiled in Phase 1 is the MWO-OWWA Welfare Case Management system, which handles assistance requests, medical concerns, and repatriation cases. The facility also houses the Migrants Brew, a coffee bar offering complimentary beverages, and dedicated spaces for training sessions and small group meetings.
“We’re not just opening a building; we’re creating a home away from home. The center will operate seven days a week, catering to workers during their limited free time.” said Sumalinog.
The launch of Phase 1 services under the “Alagang OWWA” program marks the beginning of what officials promise to be a comprehensive support system for the estimated 200,000 Filipino workers in Hong Kong.
As renovations continue in other sections of the facility, MWO-OWWA officials report that additional services will be rolled out in subsequent phases, though specific timelines were not disclosed.
The center’s soft opening comes at a crucial time when support for overseas workers has become increasingly vital, particularly in addressing mental health concerns and providing immediate assistance during emergencies.
“This is the first OFW centre all over the world and we hope to establish more of this model centre for the benefit of our OFW around the globe” Atty. Edelyn Dubgan-Clauustro, OWWA Director IV of AFMO said in an interview.
