HONG KONG—The bustling city of Hong Kong is abuzz with excitement as thousands of tourists have flocked to witness the highly anticipated LIV Golf tournament, which kicks off today at the prestigious Fanling golf course. This mega-event is not only set to captivate golf enthusiasts but is also expected to bring in a staggering HK$30 million in tax revenue for the government.

Andy Kwok Wing-leung, the captain of the event organizer, Hong Kong Golf Club, expressed his enthusiasm at a press conference held yesterday. Kwok highlighted the positive impact of LIV Golf on Hong Kong’s tourism sector, stating, “Staff of golf clubs, golf players and their friends and family, as well as representatives of LIV Golf, have come to Hong Kong and occupied over 600 hotel rooms per night this week.”

The tournament is poised to welcome spectators from 29 countries and territories, while the matches will be broadcast to more than 110 countries and regions worldwide, amplifying the global reach of this prestigious sporting event.

LIV Golf, a professional men’s golf tour, is owned by the Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Kwok emphasized the significance of this occasion as an opportunity for Hong Kong to showcase its offerings and present itself as a vibrant city to a global audience. He remarked, “This is a great opportunity for Hong Kong and the club to showcase what we have and to display such a great city to a global audience.”

With a total purse of US$25 million, the highest prize money in the history of Hong Kong golf, the three-day LIV Golf tournament promises intense competition among 54 world-class players vying for individual purses of US$4 million (HK$31.2 million) and team purses of US$3 million. It is a sporting spectacle that is sure to captivate both avid golf fans and casual spectators alike.

Kwok exuded confidence that the event would provide a unique and unforgettable experience for the audience. In addition to the thrilling golf action, spectators can look forward to a special music performance by DJ Gryffin and specially designed spectator zones, ensuring that the tournament transcends the boundaries of traditional golf events. Kwok stated, “I think it will be a very interesting week ahead to welcome our usual golf fans as well as some new or even nongolfers who come in just to experience LIV Golf and entertainment.”

The tournament’s first round and team competition will commence today at 12.15 pm, with players teeing off simultaneously from all 18 holes. The second round is scheduled for 12.15 pm tomorrow, followed by the third and final round at 12.05 pm on Sunday.

For avid fans and curious onlookers alike, the gates to the course will open at 10 am, granting access to the fan village, where a plethora of golf-centric activities and entertainment await their enjoyment.

The Transport Department has issued a reminder to the public, urging them to avoid driving near the golf course if they are not attending the tournament. Anticipating heavy traffic in the vicinity, the department advises those planning to watch the tournament to plan their journey in advance, taking into consideration potential road closures or diversions.
