PARIS — Hong Kong’s swimming sensation Siobhan Bernadette Haughey added another feather to her cap by securing the bronze medal in the Women’s 100m Freestyle event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on Thursday. This marks her second medal of the Games, bringing a wave of joy and pride to the city.
Haughey, who captured the silver medal in Tokyo, showcased her tenacity and skill in a closely contested race. She initially surged ahead, clocking 25.09 seconds in the first 50 meters, the second-fastest split at that point. However, in the final stretch, she was edged out, finishing third with a time of 52.33 seconds.
The gold medal was claimed by Swedish powerhouse Sarah Sjoestroem, the world record holder in the 100m freestyle, who touched the wall at 52.16 seconds. American swimmer Torri Huske followed, securing the silver with a time of 52.29 seconds.
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, John Lee Ka-chiu, expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Haughey and her coach. “Siobhan has maintained a high level of performance and remained fearless against the world’s best athletes throughout the competitions,” Lee said. “She has now won two medals in a row, setting another brilliant result. All Hong Kong people and I are proud of her.”
Lee further acknowledged the collective efforts of all Hong Kong athletes competing in Paris. “I recognize and appreciate the efforts and dedication of all Hong Kong athletes at the Paris Olympic Games. Driven by strong determination, they have undergone rigorous training and competed with their utmost, demonstrating their talents regardless of the results,” he added. “Hong Kong people have witnessed the passion, unwavering efforts, and dedication of each athlete towards sports. We support and commend them. Their unyielding professionalism and sportsmanship have made me and the people of Hong Kong proud.”
Haughey’s bronze in the 100m Freestyle follows her earlier triumph in the Women’s 200m Freestyle, where she also secured a bronze. With these latest accolades, she cements her legacy as Hong Kong’s most decorated Olympian, boasting a total of four Olympic medals.
The city’s pride in Haughey’s achievements is palpable, as her performances continue to inspire and uplift the spirit of Hong Kong’s sports community and its supporters worldwide.
