The long-awaited four-day Easter holiday kicked off today with a bustling wave of travelers heading north, leading to significant congestion at the region’s major ports. By 10 a.m., the Immigration Department (ImmD) reported over 310,000 passenger trips, with more than 254,000 outbound passengers making their way to popular destinations.
Lo Wu Port led the charge, recording upwards of 55,000 travelers, while the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line closely followed with more than 54,000 passengers. The high volume reflects a surge in travel, particularly among tour groups eager to explore the mainland.
Meanwhile, inbound traffic saw Hong Kong International Airport emerge as the busiest point, welcoming over 12,000 arriving passengers this morning. Lo Wu Port also contributed to the influx, reporting more than 7,000 arrivals.
To accommodate the throngs of holidaymakers, the MTR announced adjustments to train services on the East Rail Line. Due to the substantial crowds at Lok Ma Chau Spur Line control points, certain northbound trains departing from Admiralty will terminate at Tai Po Market station, requiring passengers to switch trains during their journeys.
Traffic congestion added to the holiday chaos, with significant delays reported on both the Shenzhen Bay Bridge and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Authorities are urging travelers to plan accordingly as the holiday continues, with expectations for continued high traffic over the next few days.
As families and tourists take advantage of the extended weekend, the bustling scene at these ports serves as a reminder of the vibrant travel spirit that characterizes the Easter holiday in Hong Kong.
