The Hong Kong Observatory announced on Saturday that it is considering downgrading the current Strong Wind Signal No. 3 to either the Standby Signal No. 1 or the Strong Monsoon Signal between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., as Typhoon Maliksi skirts approximately 200 kilometers northwest of Hong Kong.
The Strong Wind Signal No. 3, which has been in effect since Friday afternoon, indicates that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometers per hour are expected. However, recent observations have shown a weakening trend in local winds as Maliksi continues to move towards Qingyuan and further away from Hong Kong.
In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Ngong Ping, Green Island, and Sha Chau were 74, 48, and 42 kilometers per hour, respectively, with maximum gusts exceeding 90, 62, and 59 kilometers per hour.
The Observatory has cautioned that seas will remain rough with swells, advising the public to stay away from the shoreline and refrain from engaging in water sports.
As the situation develops, residents are urged to stay updated with the latest weather information and heed all advisories issued by the authorities.
