HONG KONG – A captivating new Hong Kong film has put the city’s cinema on the international stage and sparked public fascination with its rich history, Chief Executive John Lee announced on Monday.
“Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In,” an Oscar-nominated feature, has broken box office records to become the highest-grossing Hong Kong film in local theaters. The movie, which depicts the now-demolished Kowloon Walled City, has captured the imagination of audiences both at home and abroad.
Speaking at the airport, where replicas of the film’s set are being showcased, Lee lauded the production’s ability to immerse viewers in the unique atmosphere of the former enclave.
“This exhibition not only gives residents and tourists the opportunity to experience the former ambience of the Kowloon Walled City both on- and off-screen, but also allows everyone to better understand the ingenious craftsmanship behind Hong Kong film productions, awakening people’s love for Hong Kong cinema,” he said.
The government, Lee added, will continue to promote local film culture and share Hong Kong’s compelling stories with the world. He expressed hopes that the film’s success would spur the integration of cinema and tourism, bolstering the city’s thriving movie tourism industry.
Tourism Board chairman Pang Yiu-kai echoed these sentiments, noting that a hit film is the best way to showcase Hong Kong’s allure.

“Recreating the iconic scenes from ‘Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In’ allows tourists and residents to experience the Kowloon Walled City first-hand, following the film to explore Hong Kong’s history and culture, and enjoy wonderful Hong Kong moments beyond the big screen,” Pang said.
The exhibition, organized by the Tourism Board, will also be held at the AIRSIDE shopping mall in Kai Tak in December. It will transport visitors into the world of the film, featuring recreations of a traditional cha chaan teng, a nostalgic barbershop, and the maze-like back alleys tangled with electrical wires – all hallmarks of the legendary Kowloon Walled City.
With its captivating storytelling and meticulous attention to historical detail, “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” has captivated audiences and shone a spotlight on Hong Kong’s cinematic prowess and rich cultural heritage.
