Hong Kong is aggressively positioning itself as a welcoming destination for Muslim travelers, capitalizing on a surge of visitors from predominantly Muslim countries and strategically expanding its hospitality infrastructure.
In the first five months of 2025, visitor arrivals from Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Indonesia, and Malaysia have exceeded 360,000, prompting a significant local tourism transformation.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is leading this initiative, recently launching an innovative online training resource titled “Tips for Welcoming Muslim Travellers.” The comprehensive program includes instructional videos and infographics detailing Muslim customs, dietary regulations, and religious practices.
Local hospitality sectors have responded enthusiastically. Currently, 190 restaurants have obtained halal certification, and 60 hotels have been rated as Muslim-friendly by CrescentRating, a global Muslim travel authority.
“We have made good progress in Muslim market development,” said Becky Ip Ching-tak, HKTB’s deputy executive director. “Our goal is to become a top-of-mind destination for Muslim travelers.”
The board has also hosted overseas influencers and media representatives, showcasing Hong Kong’s expanding Muslim-friendly facilities and signaling a strategic commitment to this growing tourism segment.
