HONG KONG — The vibrant tapestry of arts and culture from nearly 30 countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Belt & Road regions will come alive at the second edition of the Asia+ Festival, running from September to November. This year’s event promises to be more expansive and diverse, featuring over 100 performances and activities—a significant increase from the 29 events held last year.
During the festival’s launch parade, Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Kevin Yeung emphasized the festival’s alignment with China’s National 14th Five-Year Plan, which positions Hong Kong as a burgeoning hub for international cultural exchange. “The Asia+ Festival is not just an artistic showcase; it is a vital component of our mission to enhance people-to-people connectivity,” Yeung stated.
The festival gained recognition at the Third Belt & Road Forum for International Cooperation, where it was noted as a key initiative under the “People’s Livelihood & People-to-People Connectivity Projects,” underscoring its importance in fostering cultural ties across borders.
A standout feature of this year’s festival is the introduction of the “Middle Eastern Series,” designed to highlight the unique interplay between Middle Eastern and Western artistic traditions. Among the notable performances is “The Woven Sounds,” led by Iranian ethnomusicologist Mehdi Aminian. This ensemble will revive the nearly lost art of Persian carpet-making through music, merging auditory and visual traditions.
Additionally, award-winning clarinettist Kinan Azmeh, originally from Syria, will perform alongside percussionist John Hadfield and five emerging local musicians. This concert aims to blend contemporary and traditional influences, offering audiences a unique auditory experience.
Beyond performances, the festival will host a variety of workshops, talks, and masterclasses, fostering deeper engagement with the arts. This multifaceted approach aims to enrich the cultural landscape of Hong Kong while promoting understanding and appreciation of diverse artistic expressions.
As the Asia+ Festival gears up for an exciting three-month celebration, it stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s commitment to cultural diplomacy and artistic collaboration, inviting everyone to participate in this global dialogue through art.
