Hong Kong Braces for Sharp Weekend Temperature Plunge as Cold Front Arrives

A strong cold front moving across southern China will deliver a significant temperature plunge to Hong Kong this weekend, the Hong Kong Observatory said Wednesday.

The front is expected to reach the coast on Saturday, accompanied by strengthening northerly winds and scattered showers. Daytime highs will fall from around 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday to approximately 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) on Sunday, an overnight drop of eight degrees.

Some northern districts will experience even steeper declines. In Sheung Shui, temperatures are forecast to tumble from 24 degrees Celsius Saturday afternoon to 13 degrees Celsius early Sunday, an 11-degree swing. Ta Kwu Ling is expected to dip to 11 degrees Celsius Sunday morning, meeting the Observatory’s criteria for “cold” weather.

Saturday’s temperatures across the city are projected to range from 17 to 23 degrees Celsius, followed by a cooler 15 to 20 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The Observatory’s nine-day forecast indicates the chilly conditions will be short-lived. Temperatures are expected to rebound early next week, with sunny intervals returning Tuesday and Wednesday. Cloudier skies and a few light showers are possible Thursday and Friday.
