Hong Kong Braces for Severe Tropical Storm Tapah as No. 8 Signal Issued

The Hong Kong Observatory hoisted the No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal at 9:20 p.m. on Sunday as Severe Tropical Storm Tapah intensified, prompting residents to batten down for strong winds, heavy rain, and potential disruptions. The signal, indicating gale-force winds, is expected to remain in effect until at least 11 a.m. Monday, with authorities warning of squally showers and thunderstorms.

At 10 p.m., Tapah was centered approximately 250 kilometers south-southwest of Hong Kong, moving northwest or north-northwest at about 18 kilometers per hour. The storm is forecast to skirt within 200 kilometers southwest of the city around sunrise Monday before making landfall in western Guangdong. The Observatory noted that while the likelihood of escalating to higher signals is low, this could change if Tapah shifts closer to the Pearl River Estuary or strengthens significantly.

Local winds are expected to intensify Sunday night into Monday, bringing heavy showers and thunderstorms that could disrupt the bustling financial hub. Authorities urged residents to take immediate precautions, including securing windows and doors, clearing drains of debris, and ensuring a safe shelter away from exposed windows. Owners of neon signs, a hallmark of Hong Kong’s vibrant skyline, were advised to cut electricity to their displays to prevent hazards.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated via radio, television, or the Hong Kong Observatory’s website and mobile app for real-time weather information. As the city prepares for the storm’s impact, officials emphasized the importance of vigilance to ensure safety.
